Welcome to Project MASCOT
Mission Statement
Project MASCOT (Mentoring Alliance: Students and Communities Outreaching Together) is a one-year program for University of Florida student volunteers interested in helping and motivating elementary school children in the Gainesville area. Project MASCOT works in conjunction with CHAMPS (Collegiates Helping As Mentors in Public Schools) to offer mentoring for 30 minutes each week throughout the academic year to children that are deemed "at risk." At the end of the Spring term, the mentors and mentees will take a trip to a Florida theme park.
Formerly known as Project Sea World, Project MASCOT has strived to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged children for 11 years. The program began as a vision of one student who recognized that more needed to be done by their fellow student volunteers regarding the needs of disadvantaged children. Project Mascot is a non-profit student organization, under the umbrella of University of Florida's Center for Leadership and Service, dedicated to the empowerment of children, benefiting a population of financially and emotionally disadvantaged children.
Project MASCOT will be volunteering at Terwilliger Elementary School during the 2008-2009 school year. Lunches will be from 10:45am-11:15am and 11:45am-12:15pm. There may be an opportunity for you to stay after lunch for a few minutes to play at recess or read with the student depending on that days schedule. Please plan to spend an hour at school initially and we will see how things develop.
Project MASCOT will begin collecting dues on October 1st, when we have our first meeting; you will be assigned a student there.
Note: Dues are $65 (cash or check).
Checks should be made out to: The University of Florida.
Subject line: MASCOT Dues- "Your First and Last Name".
***We are no longer accepting applications for the 2008-2009 school year.***
