The Disability Resource Center (DRC) is part of the Dean of Students Office and is located in Reid Hall. The DRC provides classroom accommodations to students with documented disabilities. Students with disabilities must follow all standard admissions procedures as outlined by the University of Florida Admissions Office. Prospective students with documented physical, medical, sensory, or psychological disabilities must meet all standard admissions requirements. If requested, applications for admission will be reviewed by the Disability Resource Center and recommendations will be made to the Admissions Committee. Recommendations could specify retaking standardized tests with accommodations or petitioning for a foreign language substitution. If you plan to visit the UF campus, please call 352-392-8565 ext. 200 to arrange for an appointment with the Disability Resource Center. A staff member will be happy to discuss our services with you and answer any questions that you may have.
Admissions Checklist for Students with Disabilities
- We recommend that you request and utilize any needed accommodations on the SAT, ACT, AP or CLEP tests. You may need to update your disability documentation prior to requesting accommodations on these tests. To find out more go to: www.sat.org or www.act.org. It may take several weeks to find out if your accommodations have been granted. We recommend that you take the SAT or ACT at least twice.
- If you would like your admissions file to be reviewed by the Disability Resource Center, you must check the "special admission consideration because of a disability" box on the admissions application and submit recent documentation of your disability. A copy of our documentation guidelines can be located at http://dso.ufl.edu/drc/getstarted.php. In addition to your documentation, a personal statement outlining the impact of your disability on your academic performance (e.g. coursework, GPA), the accommodations you have received, the time frame you have received accommodations, and an indication of whether or not you received accommodations on the ACT/SAT would be helpful information to the review committee at the Disability Resource Center. Only applications with the disability consideration box checked will be forwarded to the Disability Resource Center for review.
- If you did not successfully complete two years of high school foreign language due to a disability, you should contact the Disability Resource Center directly at 352-392-8565 ext. 200 for further information regarding petitioning for a substitution. American Sign Language (ASL) is accepted as a foreign language. Petitions will require appropriate documentation of a disability that impacts learning a foreign language.
- If you are admitted and require accommodations for your disability while attending UF, you must register with the Disability Resource Center. An intake appointment is required- Please bring a copy of your documentation with you to the appointment. Students are encouraged to register prior to the beginning of their first term. Many students register during their Preview Orientation visit.
