Agroforestry extension and the role of trees on small hillside farms in Haiti
Lecture given by Dr. Michael Bannister, Assistant Director, Center for Subtropical Agroforestry
Michael Bannister joined the School of Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida in 2001 to serve as the Assistant Director for the Center for Subtropical Agroforestry (CSTAF). Prior to this he worked for 19 years in international forestry and agroforestry development projects in Central America and the Caribbean. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala during the 1970s and beginning in 1981 resided in Haiti for 16 years working on a series of successful USAID-funded agroforestry extension projects for the Pan American Development Foundation. He is currently the distance education coordinator for the School of Forest Resources and Conservation and teaches the online course he developed, Agroforestry in the Southeastern US.

Mountains Beyond Mountains: Another Public Health Lesson Learned in Central America
A lecture given by Dr. Alba Burns
Alba Amaya Burns, MD, MSc., CTM, works extensively in the areas of Tropical Medicine, Public Health, Health Program Administration, and Academia. She served for five years as the Infectious Disease Specialist for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in El Salvador, managing USAIDs HIV/AIDS $3.5 million portfolio, as well as TB $3.5 million portfolio, covering also other emerging diseases. She led HIV/AIDS prevention efforts in El Salvador and as a member of the Country Coordinated Mechanism; she designed and implemented a $27 million grant for the Global Fund to fight HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria. An experienced health care leader, educator, and lecturer, she has applied her knowledge of public health practice to administer large scale health promotion efforts as well as train communities and leaders on how to manage disease and its impacts. Dr. Burns is also a Clinical Associate Professor in the College of Public Health and Health Professions at UF.
Currently Dr. Alba Burns is a member of the WHO/PAHO Technical Advisor Group for the Anti Microbial Resistance Initiative of the Americas; she is advising Deans of the College of Medicine of Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru and El Salvador Universities to update their curricula by introducing new approaches to reduce hospital acquired infections in their countries. She also serves as WHO/PAHO Technical Advisor for the Tuberculosis Low Prevalence Latin American countries, and for the Regional National TB Program Directors.
