If I choose to stay on campus, how long must I stay there?
You are committed to live on campus for the length of the Residence Hall Contract that you signed. The contract periods for Residence Hall Contracts are: Fall/Spring (academic year), Spring only, Summer A, Summer B, Summer C (Summer A+B Terms). Read your Residence Hall Contract to determine the length of your contractual commitment.

Do I have to be a student or enrolled full-time to live on campus?
During the academic year, you must be a full-time, registered University of Florida student as defined by your academic college to contract for campus housing. Students who drop below full-time enrolled status are allowed to remain within housing at the discretion of their Assistant Director of Housing for Residence Life. During summer terms, you must be registered for a minimum of one semester hour per each summer term that you wish to live on campus.

What if I’m not enrolled in Summer, but will remain in Gainesville?
During summer terms, you must be registered for a minimum of one semester hour per each summer term that you wish to live on campus.

My friend and I want to be roommates — what should we do?
You must request each other as roommates on your Residence Hall Contracts by including each others’ names and UFID numbers and indicate “Roommate” as your “Most Important Preference.” Students who request each other as roommates are assigned to a room based on the latest priority date.

Can I change my building or roommate preference?
Changes to preferences are accepted online and/or in writing through May 1 for summer and fall/spring academic year contracts.

Can I get a private room? What will it cost?
Single rooms are offered to students who request this room type in housing priority date order. This policy gives preference for single rooms to upper-division students who have initial housing priority dates of two or three years ago! Single room costs vary.

When will I find out my room assignment and roommate info?
Most students will receive their summer housing assignment and roommate information by late May. Most housing assignments and roommate information for fall/spring are sent in mid-late June. Notice is sent to individual students via email when they are available.

If I am unhappy with my room or roommate, can I change?
After the first full week of classes, room transfers may begin. Because of crowded conditions in the fall, room transfers cannot always be made immediately. Attempts will be made to resolve roommate conflicts. When conflicts cannot be resolved, room transfers will be made on a space-available basis.

May I tour the buildings or see my room ahead of time?
A year-round tour room is available in Jennings Hall. Tours of some other housing facilities are available during Preview (see Preview schedule for buildings and times).

When do I pay rent?
Students are required to pay a housing advance rent payment when they return a signed Residence Hall Contract. The balance payment (the difference between the amount of advance rent payment and the total rent) is due as follows:

Fall Semester — on or before August 1
Spring Semester — on or before December 1
First Summer Term (A) — on or before April 25
Second Summer Term (B) — on or before June 8

Balance payments and/or full payments for each respective semester or summer term received after the above noted dates may result in cancellation of the contract with no refund and/or the assessment of a late charge. The late charge is $50. The option of assessing late charges rests with the Department of Housing and Residence Education.

How are the rooms furnished? What are the mattress sizes?
Each room is furnished with beds, mattresses, dressers, study desks, desk chairs, a wastebasket, and window coverings. You need to supply your own pillow, blankets, bedspreads, linens, dishes, fan (for non-air conditioned halls), and room decorations. We recommend that you coordinate your efforts with your roommate. In the Springs Residential Complex, 80" long x 39" wide x 7" thick mattresses are provided. In all other halls, mattresses are 80" long x 36" wide x 7" thick. See the IRHA Packing List for other suggestions: http://www.housing.ufl.edu/housing/packinglist.html

What about refrigerators and microwaves?
Refrigerators are permitted in resident rooms provided the following guidelines are met: a) all refrigerators must be UL approved; b) door gaskets must be in good condition; c) all refrigerators must be equipped with three-prong grounded plug which must be plugged in wall outlet; d) unit amperage must not exceed 3.5 amps; g) unit size must not exceed 12 cu. ft.; h) students must maintain refrigerators in a safe and sanitary condition.

Microwave ovens will be permitted in resident rooms provided the following guidelines are met: a) a maximum of two microwave ovens are permitted in a student room if each individual unit is .75 cubic ft. or less (or only one microwave oven is permitted if the unit exceeds .75 cubic ft); b) microwave ovens must be UL approved; c) unit wattage must not exceed 1500 watts. Note: The Keys and Lakeside Complexes have microwaves in student apartments.

Can I cook in my room?
Yes. For a list of approved cooking appliances for use in room or kitchen area, see "P.19. Fire Safety" at this link: http://www.housing.ufl.edu/housing/reslife_standardssingle.html

Are pets allowed?
Yes. You must use the Pet Policy Contract form and obtain prior written approval of roommates and residence hall staff. For a list of approved pets, see P.16. Pets at http://www.housing.ufl.edu/housing/reslife_standardssingle.html

Can I have a car on campus?
Parking is very limited on campus. You must register your vehicle with Transportation and Parking Services, 354 Gale Lemerand Drive, and purchase a decal. The type of decal issued is determined by your local address and academic classification. Lower-division students living on campus park in Red 3 lots located in the parking garage on Gale Lemerand Drive and parking lots next to Simpson and Trusler Halls. Overflow parking is in "All Decal" or "All Red" lots located in various areas on campus. Upper-division students living on campus park in the Red 1 lots near residence halls, fraternities, and sororities. Proof of ownership of the vehicle is required to purchase a decal.

May I have overnight guests in residence halls?
Only guests of the same gender are permitted to sleep in the residence hall rooms. Co-habitation is prohibited; only the residents assigned to a room may live there. Roommate approval is required for any guest. Appropriate hall staff approval is required for guests of the same gender planning to stay longer than three days; guests of the same gender may be approved to stay up to seven consecutive days. Each assigned resident is permitted to have no more than two guests visiting in their room at any one time. Residents are responsible for and can be held accountable for the behavior of the guests. Residents and/or guests may only use residence hall bathrooms designated for use by their respective gender. See P.11. Visitation and Room Guests at http://www.housing.ufl.edu/housing/reslife_standardssingle.html.
