What is the University of Florida Student Government?
Established in 1909, Student Government exists to represent and act in the interests of the students. Student Government (or SG) has created an academic and extra-curricular environment benefitting students through its programs and works to sustain and improve them each year. SG's power is balanced among three branches: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial.
What are the three branches of Student Government?
- The Executive Branch is the largest. It consists of the Student Body President, Vice President and Treasurer, as well as 27 Cabinets, which handle various issues on campus. The Executive Branch also includes ACCENT, the largest student-run speakers bureau in the nation, and Student Government Productions (SGP), which works to bring famous performers to U.F. Students Taking Action Against Racism (STAAR) and IMAGE, the SG owned audio and video division are also part of the Executive Branch.
- The Legislative Branch is comprised of the Student Senate, which consists of 80 elected students who represent the student body according to college classification or residency.
- The Judicial Branch consists of the Student Honor Court. The Honor Court gives you the right to have a hearing before your peers.
Why should a student get involved in Student Government?
Student Government is a great way to get involved and becoming involved is easier than you may think. Applications are available in room 305 on the third floor of the Reitz Union for those who want to become a part of the various cabinets or SG agencies.
