What is Student Legal Services?
University of Florida students face a variety of problems in addition to the challenges of academic life. Many students are forced to deal with problem landlords, insurance companies, creditors, and the police for the first time in their lives. Moreover, most students cannot afford attorneys. Fortunately, University of Florida students do not have to face their problems alone. Student Legal Services, funded by Student Government through Activities and Services fees, provides free legal assistance to full time UF students.
What kind of services does Student Legal Services provide?
Four full time attorneys, all members of the Florida Bar, meet the legal needs of UF students by providing advice, confidential counseling and legal representation. The lawyers are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in Suite 368 on the third floor of the J. Wayne Reitz Union to assist students with landlord-tenant problems, consumer law, property damage, credit problems, criminal charges, traffic citations, family matters, name changes, sealing or expunging arrest records and powers of attorney. Any full-time UF student is encouraged to call Student Legal Services for assistance at 329-5297. All matters discussed with attorneys are strictly confidential. Free notary services are available without an appointment.
What other resources does Student Legal Services provide?
In addition, Student Legal Services attorneys provide lectures, workshops and other educational programs on a variety of legal issues to educate students on their legal rights and responsibilities. Any residence hall, fraternity, sorority or student group can arrange a program. SLS also offers students the opportunity to gain exposure to the legal field and hands on experience through an internship program available to undergraduate and law students.
