History
The Matthews Society, named in honor of D.R. Billy Matthews, comprises an elite group of students from a broad spectrum of campus involvement who have displayed exceptional leadership skills, outstanding moral fiber and ethical decision making, a passionate commitment to UF and the community and an avid drive to give back to the university. The members of the Society are called upon to act as student representatives to discuss relevant issues on campus. They also act as a Speakers Bureau and resource for other student leaders on campus through a newly constructed mentoring program.
D. R. Billy Matthews has been recognized as one of the most involved students to ever attend the University of Florida. During his time at UF, D.R. Billy Matthews served as both Student Body President and Honor Court Chancellor. He later went on to become director of Alumni Affairs, the first Director of the Student Union and a United States Congressional Representative.
