How long is orientation?

New Student and Family Programs offers a variety of orientation programs to assist new students according to their specified needs. Each program allows new students and family members different opportunities to learn how to be a successful Gator in and out of the classroom.

Summer B, Fall, and Innovation Academy, Freshman Admits:
All new freshmen (with the exception of Summer A/C admits) will attend a two-day overnight Preview Program (orientation). This program will begin at 8:00 a.m. on day one and will go until 5:00 p.m. of day two. This program is an overnight experience that will include a one-on-one advising appointment, course registration, Gator 1 Central, campus resource presentations, and Preview Course Registration Confirmation.

Do not make plans on day two which will prevent you from staying until 5 p.m. There is NO possibility to leave before 5 p.m. on day two.

Students attending the two-day  session will be provided overnight accommodations in a UF Residence Hall for the first day of the program, however, family members will need to make their own accommodations for the evening. Students will need to provide their own linens and towels for the overnight stay. Students can choose to pay for an additional night, the evening prior to the start of the session if they choose to.

Innovation Academy Admits:
All Innovation Academy admits will take part in a multi-step orientation program.
Preview: First, admitted Innovation Academy (IA) students and family members will participate in a two-day overnight program held through the summer between June and July 2014. During Preview, IA students will engage in small group breakouts with orientation leaders as well as a faculty academic advisor. Students will learn about campus resources, review University, major and IA program expectations and requirements, receive Common Read book, and create a tentative pre-semester and spring semester success plan.

Gateways: During the first fall, or pre-fall, IA students will engage in interactive Online Orientation Modules known as Gateways. These modules will become available starting in early August. Gateways will re-connect IA students in their UF experience. Each individual module will provide in-depth information about campus resources, academic exploration and extended course selection preparation.

Transfer and Summer A/C Freshman Admits:
Transfer and Summer A/C Freshman Preview Program is a one day program that covers all the information a new student will need to have a successful start at UF. This one-day session reserved only for Transfer Students and Summer A/C Freshman admits will begin at 8:00 a.m. and will run until approximately 6:00 p.m. Participants need to stay the entire duration to fully participate in the orientation program and complete all program components that are required prior to the start of classes. From understanding new academic policies and procedures, meeting with your respective college, to figuring out how to enhance your degree with out-of-class experiences once you are here, the Preview schedule is filled with the important things you need and want to check off your to-do list to ensure your successful transition to UF.

As a reminder all UF Orientation Programs are mandatory programs for all new students. Students who do not stay for the duration of the program risk cancellation of their course registration completed at orientation. Please select a session which will allow you to dedicate yourself fully to your orientation experience.

Family Session:
Our Family Preview program and Foundations program provides additional information on how family members and guests can support their new student in being a successful Gator in and out of the classroom. Family Preview runs concurrently with, but separately from, the student program. However, you will have several opportunities to meet with your student during the program. Family Preview and Foundations is offered at all of our student Preview Programs including: Summer, Fall, Innovation Academy and Transfer Preview. As a reminder all UF Orientation Programs are mandatory programs for all new students. Students who do not stay for the duration of the program risk cancellation of their course registration completed at orientation. Please select a session which will allow you to dedicate yourself fully to your orientation experience.

Is orientation mandatory?
Yes, all new students are required to attend orientation (i.e. Freshmen Preview, Innovation Academy Preview, or Transfer Preview). During orientation, students will meet with an academic advisor, have the opportunity to register for classes, and learn how to be a successful Gator in and out of the classroom. Family Preview is not mandatory for family members or guests, but attending the program is an excellent opportunity for family members/guests to learn more about the University of Florida and get questions answered. Families may not want to bring small children due to the format of the program.
Does it matter which orientation session I attend? Will I be able to get a good schedule of classes if I attend a later session?
It does not matter which orientation session a student attends as long as the student attends a session designated for the term in which he/ she has been admitted. Specific designated sessions can be found by logging into the registration system. The University of Florida holds seats in critical courses for each session and advising block, so students at each session have an equal opportunity to register for classes.
What if I cannot attend one of the orientation dates?
Orientation is mandatory for all new students. In the event of an emergency which prevents you from attending orientation, contact New Student and Family Programs at (352) 392-8396.
What if I need to change my orientation date?
In the event of a conflict with a session for which you have a reservation, please log into your reservation to change your session date. A $20.00 administrative charge will be assessed immediately for each session change you make. Please note we will not be able to place you in a session that has closed or is filled to capacity so please make sure to register for a session you are able to attend. You can click on View a Reservation on the main orientation menu to view changes to your registration.
What if I need to add a guest after I signed up for orientation?
As soon as you know you need to add guests for orientation, email us at newstudentinfo@dso.ufl.edu no later than five (5) working days prior to your session. Please provide your name, UFID, the name(s) of the guest(s) you would like to add and the new total number of guests. We do sign up guests on site during the sessions, but contacting our office beforehand is much more efficient and makes check-in the morning of the session much easier. Students may not register onsite for a Preview session.
What if I need to remove a guest after I signed up for orientation?
As soon as you know you need to remove guests for orientation, email us at newstudentinfo@dso.ufl.edu no later than five (5) working days prior to your session.
